Kilmainham Gaol Built just oustide the Dublin city center this gaol  provides a realistic insight into what is was like to have been imprisoned between 1796 when it opened and 1924 when it closed. It offers a wide ranging and up close view of Ireland's struggle for freedom with many of the most famous figures in Irish history have resided there. Leaders of the rebellions of 1798, 1803, 1848, 1867 and 1916 were detained here. Such names as Robert Emmet, Charles Stewart Parnell, leaders of the 1916 Rising like Pearse and his ill-fated brother. People like Plunkett and the chapel where he was married before his execution. 

  There is also an important  exhibition on the penal history of the prison and its restoration. The tour of the prison includes an audio-visual show. Tours may be arranged for visitors with special needs by prior arrangement. The visit includes a guided tour and exhibition. Please note that this is a very busy site and visitors may experience a delay during the summer months. Having been on the tour myself the guide is one of the best I have experienced. Knowledgeable and nuanced delivery. Opening Times: April-September: 9.30am-6pm daily (last admission at 5pm)October-March: Monday to Saturday 9.30am-5.30pm(last admission 4pm), Sundays 10am-6pm(last admission 5pm).
